Prosecutor eyeing infant car death charges

CINCINNATI, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A Cincinnati mother whose 11-month-old child died after being left in a minivan may face charges following a police investigation, a prosecutor says.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said Thursday that he won't file charges against Dr. Jodie Edwards, who left her child in the car for hours this week, until he has the final results of the police inquiry, Cincinnati's WLWT-TV reported

"I expect the Cincinnati Police Homicide Division will turn over their investigation sometime next week," he said in a statement. "There are certain facts which must be determined prior to making any charging decision."

Edwards found her unresponsive daughter in the car Wednesday, a day which saw temperatures reach 90 degrees.

The president of Cincinnati Christian University, where the car was parked and where Edwards is employed, told WLWT-TV the child's family had the university's deepest sympathies.

"Dr. Edwards is a responsible member of our faculty, and right now, our intention is to surround her and her family with support, and love, and prayer," CCU President Dr. David Faust told the TV station.
