KANAB , Utah, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A nearly 1,200-year-old pit house discovered near Kanab, Utah, is an "amazing" find for state officials, Utah Department of Transportation officials say.
UDOT archaeologist Pam Higgins said the site where the single-family dwelling was found was initially located in 2006, but research on the historical site was not completed until last week, The Salt Lake Tribune said Thursday.
Higgins said the site was in great condition in relation to its age and came complete with storage containers and a communal hearth.
"What is so amazing about the site is the pristine condition it is in," the archaeologist said.
Higgins said broken pots were also found at around the pit house, but added those artifacts could be repaired for future study.
UDOT spokesman Kevin Kitchen said the site near U.S. Highway 89 was found by surveyors mapping out a possible road project. He told the Tribune it was unlikely the site would force an alteration to the construction project.
