Police said the tipster informed them a baby named "Hope" had been left near a phone booth on a Long Island street corner and police quickly found the abandoned child in the bag, the Daily News in New York said Wednesday.
The caller sounded like a woman, said to authorities. They didn't speculate if the tipster could have been the child's mother, the Daily News said.
The child, who was found with her umbilical cord attached, was taken to an area hospital after being found late Sunday night.
Police told the Daily News that they are searching for the child's mother, who could have avoided any potential charges by legally leaving her newborn at a hospital.
