ISTANBUL, Turkey, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Turkey announced it was increasing the number of airline flights in and out Armenia that will be allowed to transit Turkish airspace.

The newspaper Hurriyet said the move was made to facilitate humanitarian assistance and evacuations from Georgia.

Prior to the current crisis in Georgia air traffic was generally routed over that troubled region.

It was not clear Tuesday if the new rules would be in place by Sept. 6 when Turkey and Armenia square off in a World Cup soccer qualifying match.
