LONDON, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Britain's royal family is going green with the queen's Scottish estate being patrolled by police on bicycles rather than in sports utility vehicles.
It is the latest environmentally friendly effort at Balmoral, where the queen spends her summers. Other innovations have included conversion of the castle's boilers to run on wood chips rather than oil and experiments by Prince Charles aimed at harnessing water from the River Dee to cut electricity bills, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.
"Wherever possible the grounds are being patrolled by officers on black mountain bikes," a newspaper source said. "They are delighted -- they're slashing the fuel bill and getting a good workout as well."
The queen has been "going green" for more than 20 years but "lets the actions speak for themselves," said an aide, describing "Her Highness" switching off lights at Buckingham Palace and pushing for an environmental impact study of travel by the royal family.
