DAYTON, Ohio, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Testimony began Monday following opening statements in the trial of a woman accused of killing her baby in a microwave oven in Dayton, Ohio.
A jury of eight women and four men -- plus four alternates -- is hearing the case against China Arnold, 28, charged with aggravated murder in the 2005 death of her 3-week-old daughter. It is the second trial for Arnold, the first trial having ended in a mistrial in February after a man told authorities his son saw a boy put the newborn in the microwave.
Arnold's lawyer told the jury evidence in the case will point to the boy, who was younger than 10 at the time and has not been publicly identified. Prosecutor Dan Brandt told the jury no credible evidence suggested anyone but Arnold put the infant in the microwave, the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News reported.
An official from the Montgomery County (Ohio) Coroner's Office testified Monday about forensic details associated with the death of Paris Talley.
Jury selection last week took five days, in part because it is a death-penalty case and the media attention surrounding it, the newspaper said. Only one of the 16 jurors and alternates is black; Arnold is black.
