Taliban issues warning to Canadians

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Canadians, including aid workers, will endure more attacks unless their government withdraws its troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban is warning.

The Islamic extremist group's Internet warning was confirmed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Sunday. It came after an Aug. 13 roadside bomb ambush killed Canadian aid workers Jacqueline Kirk and Shirley Case, along with a Trinidadian-American aid worker and the group's Afghan driver.

"Events such as Logar will happen again," the letter said. "The Afghans did not go to Canada to kill Canadians. Rather it is the Canadians who came to Afghanistan to kill and torture the Afghans to please the fascist regime of America."

Although most of the 23 aid workers killed in the first eight months of 2008 were Afghans, the recent attack on workers with the International Rescue Commission was the worst attack on foreigners in several years.
