SACRAMENTO, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was recuperating Sunday from knee surgery to repair an injury he sustained while working out, a spokesman said.
Schwarzenegger had the arthroscopic surgery Saturday night, spokesman Aaron McClear said. The procedure -- to repair cartilage the governor tore several weeks ago -- required general anesthesia. Lt. Gov. John Garamendi assumed the duties of governor for about an hour while Schwarzenegger was in surgery, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.
McLear said Schwarzenegger was back on the job Sunday and his recuperation would not get in the way of his work.
Schwarzenegger, 61, had been scheduled to share hosting duties Saturday with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., at a conference on environmental matters in Lake Tahoe, Calif. He canceled the appearance and saw a doctor instead.
