Lebanon-Syria plan ambassador exchange

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Lebanese officials say they are ready to again exchange ambassadors with Syria, signaling an end to years of icy relations.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh expects the exchange of high-level diplomats to come "within a month or two at most," he said Saturday. A recent visit to Syria by Lebanese President Michel Suleiman helped precipitate the thaw, reported the KUNA news agency.

"The visit helped remove many obstacles facing the development of ties between the two Arab countries," Salloukh said. "The results of the Syrian-Lebanese summit talks will be reviewed by the Lebanese Cabinet, which will take a final decision on the establishment of diplomatic ties with Syria."
