Woman, three children killed in car

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- A single-car accident in Saskatchewan killed a woman, three children and left two other children comatose, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

The car left the highway, went into a water-filled ditch and landed on its roof around 3:40 p.m. Thursday about 100 miles northeast of Saskatoon, the Saskatoon StarPhoenix reported.

Two of the school-age children were related to the driver, although the RCMP was withholding the victims' names late Thursday.

Sgt. Tammy Patterson told the Regina Leader-Post the cause of the crash was a mystery.

"Right now we're at the point of gathering evidence to see what happened but at this time we're not in any sort of position to even guess at what happened," Patterson said.

A friend of the family, who asked not to be named, said the victims were on their way home to Melfort.

"They were just little kids, 10-year-olds, that died," she told the newspaper.
