JAKARTA, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Lawyers for three men facing execution in Indonesia for the bombing of a Bali nightclub plan a new challenge that could delay their deaths.
The Constitutional Court gave the lawyers leave to appeal Thursday, the Australian newspaper The Age reports. The lawyers say they will seek to block all executions in Indonesia on the grounds that the firing squad is inhumane.
The defendants, Amrozi, Imam Samudra and Mukhlas, have always said that they want to be martyred, The Age said. They were convicted of the 2002 bombing, which killed 202 people, including scores of Australian tourists.
The attorney general's office has said it wants to carry out the executions before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which starts in a little more than two weeks. A spokesman told The Age the new appeal wouldn't interfere with that time frame.
Adnan Wirawan, one of the lawyers, suggested that the government is under pressure from Australia to execute the three, The Age said.
