CINCINNATI, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- A former streetcar line in Cincinnati is set to be revitalized to offer additional transportation services to the city's residents, officials say.
American Public Transportation Association official Jim Graebner said by reintroducing the streetcar system, Cincinnati officials would be bringing together neighbors and offering another travel option, The New York Times said Thursday.
"They serve to coalesce a neighborhood," the streetcar and vintage trolley committee chairman said of streetcar systems. "That's very evident in places like San Francisco, which never got rid of its streetcar system."
The new $132 million system would stretch from Cincinnati's business district to its riverfront stadiums, as well as the University of Cincinnati and six area hospitals.
For Cincinnati resident Jean-Robert de Cavel, bringing back the system that was dismantled in the 1950s will bring about renewed interest one specific part of the city.
"Human beings can be silly because we move away from things too quickly in this country," de Cavel told the Times. "Streetcar is definitely going to create a reason for young people to come downtown."
