Accidents kill 16 in India

NEW DELHI, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Two separate road accidents Thursday killed at least 16 people in India.

At least 11 bus passengers died in the coastal town of Mangalore in southern Karnataka state when the vehicle fell into a river after skidding off a rain-soaked road, CNN reported, quoting police.

The bus was carrying 20 children and 11 adults and among those killed were seven children, police said. Police said six boys were rescued from the river. The fate of others wasn't known.

In the second accident, five people died in Rajkot in western Gujarat state after their car fell into culvert after a tire burst, police said. The vehicle was carrying eight people, the Press Trust of India reported. The other three who were injured were taken to a hospital.
