PUL-I-ALAM, Afghanistan, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- The Taliban in Afghanistan claimed responsibility Wednesday for killing three humanitarian aid workers in Logar province.

The three female workers included an American, a Canadian and an Irish national, CNN reported, saying Afghan officials identified all three as working for the International Rescue Committee, based in New York.

Abdullah Wardak, governor of Logar province, told reporters the aid workers were traveling in a two-car convoy headed to Kabul when gunmen opened fire on them in Pul-i-Alam, the capital of Logar.

CNN said the Taliban claimed responsibility for the workers' deaths, which officials said brought to 22 the number of humanitarian aid workers killed in Afghanistan this year.
