SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Texas authorities are refusing to say how close they are to wrapping up their investigation of a polygamous West Texas sect.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety said at one time authorities were pursuing 50 bigamy investigations and 20 sexual abuse cases involving the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the San Antonio Express-News reported Wednesday.
However, department spokeswoman Tela Mange declined to reveal what stage the investigation is at.
Mange would only say her agency "is still working it."
FLDS spokesman Willie Jessop said the department's announcement on Tuesday is little more than a ploy to focus attention away from the state's failed effort to seize more than 400 of the sect's children.
Two months after the children were taken into custody, the Texas Supreme Court ruled the state had overstepped its bounds and ordered the children be returned to their parents.
