Senator loses patience on military housing

WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A Florida lawmaker says he may hold up the appointment of the new U.S. Air Force secretary over the derailment of military housing construction.

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., is on the Senate's Armed Services Committee and has indicated he will hold up the confirmation of Acting Air Force Secretary Michael Donley until questions over the bungled housing program are answered, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer said Wednesday.

The newspaper said Nelson is among a number of members of Congress miffed at a Pentagon privatization project that gave a six-state construction project to a company that reputedly has a questionable track record but solid political connections.

A whistle-blower has accused the company of downgrading the quality of the housing while inflating costs, the newspaper said.
