JAIPUR, India, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- The Japanese father of a baby girl born in India under a surrogate contract cannot take her home because she has no legal mother.
The man and his wife arranged for the pregnancy, CNN reports. But they divorced before the child was born.
The biological mother also has no interest in the child, named Manjhi Yamada.
The father and his mother went to India to get the baby. Under Indian law, however, a mother must be involved for an infant to get a passport.
"It is absolutely traumatic, especially for the grandmother, because they have a visa for a limited period of time," said Dr. Sadhana Arya, who is helping to care for the baby. "What happens if the period expires? How do they manage the problem? Where do they leave the baby? Where does the baby stay? Who cares for the baby?"
Emiko Yamada, the grandmother, said she just wants to return ot Japan with her granddaughter.
