MONTREAL, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- The mayor of Montreal has called for a rapid inquiry into riots that rocked the Canadian city Sunday and Monday after a fatal police shooting.

Mayor Gerald Tremblay said he wanted results to be made public as quickly as possible on what led officers to shoot three youths, killing one of them in a North Montreal immigrant neighborhood, The Gazette newspaper reported Tuesday.

The investigation was ordered Monday after rioting eased. It will be conducted by the provincial Surete du Quebec police force, the report said.

Freddy Villanueva, 18, died of a gunshot wound Saturday night, and two of his friends were injured. Police said they felt threatened when a group of youths began encircling them.

The violence began Sunday night and more than 500 police officers were deployed. Police Chief Yvan Delorme said a policewoman was shot in the leg, two other officers suffered minor injuries, and a paramedic had a bottle smashed on his head.

Looters smashed store windows and set fire to bus shelters and vehicles, as well as a fire truck, the report said.
