Judge orders drug agent memos released

CLEVELAND, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A judge has ordered the opening of internal memos on an Ohio drug agent whose investigations led to the wrongful convictions of nearly two dozen people.

U.S. District Judge James Gwin ordered federal prosecutors to hand over all internal documents that discuss the credibility of Lee Lucas. He has been at the center of a scandal since 2007 when a drug informant testified that he and Lucas lied about cases to get convictions, The Plain Dealer newspaper in Cleveland reported Tuesday.

The judge already is considering an FBI report about Lucas written in 2003, years before the Mansfield, Ohio, case that led to 23 false convictions. Defense attorneys have argued for some time that prosecutors weren't turning over information relating to their own concerns about Lucas's credibility. Gwin said he had his own questions about Lucas's honesty during an April 2007 hearing for three alleged drug dealers, The Plain Dealer said.
