GREELEY, Colo., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A German shepherd dog spent six weeks near its dead master's body after the man apparently killed himself in a remote area, Colorado authorities said.

Cash, a 3-year-old female dog, was found alive and well Sunday in the nearly 200,000-acre Pawnee National Grassland close to the body of Jake Baysinger, 25, who it is believed shot himself, The Greeley Tribune reported Tuesday. He had been reported missing on June 28 but Weld County Sheriff deputies had been unable to find the man or his pickup.

A rancher found the man's body after first seeing the dog, which apparently survived by eating mice and rabbits, the newspaper said.

Baysinger's wife, Sara, took Cash home with her Monday from the Humane Society of Weld County shelter.

"At least we know it's over now," she said.
