ERIE, Pa., Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Likely Republican U.S. presidential nominee John McCain is calling on the United Nations Security Council to condemn Russia for aggression against Georgia.
Speaking in Erie, Pa., McCain said the United States should immediately seek international censure of Russia, The Hill reported.
"We should move ahead with the resolution despite Russian veto threats, and submit Russia to the court of world public opinion," McCain said.
McCain also called on NATO begin discussing a possible deployment of a peacekeeping force to the breakaway province South Ossetia, saying Russia's military incursion into Georgia doesn't seem to be an attempt to restore the status quo in South Ossetia but rather a move to topple Georgia's democratically elected government, the Hill reported.
"Whatever tensions and hostilities might have existed between Georgians and Ossetians, they in no way justify Moscow's path of violent aggression," McCain said.
