COVINGTON, Ky., Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Federal prosecutors say two former Kentucky jail guards conspired to allow inmates to beat and sexually molest a high school student jailed for drunken driving.
One-time Grant County, Ky., jailers Wesley Lanham and Shawn Freeman faced trial Monday in Covington, Ky., on charges they conspired to violate the teen's civil rights, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
Prosecutors say Lanham and Freeman concocted an excuse to remove the 120-pound boy from the jail's drunk tank and move him to Cell 101, which held 14 adult male inmates, and told the inmates they were sending in a boy they wanted to scare. The men beat the teen with jail slippers and repeatedly sexually molested him the cell's shower, the newspaper said.
Lanham and Freeman face possible life imprisonment charges if found guilty. The jail sergeant on duty the night of the attack, Clinton Sydnor, and another guard have pleaded guilty to the charges, the Enquirer said.
The teen survived the ordeal and reached a $1.4 million settlement with the county.
