Floods kill 82 in Vietnam

HANOI, Vietnam, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Vietnam's government says at least 82 people have been killed and nearly 40 others are missing following heavy rains and flooding in northern provinces.

The flooding has swept away hundreds of homes and destroyed thousands of crops, the Vietnam News Agency reported Monday.

Hardest hit was mountainous Lao Cai Province where 63 people are listed as dead or missing.

In Yen Bai Province, the lead compartment of a train collapsed due to floods and heavy winds but thousands of people in the train's passenger cars escaped without injury.

Many roads in Quang Ninh, Ha Giang and Bac Kan provinces have been flooded or hit by landslides, the news agency reports.

So far, Vietnam's Red Cross has provided nearly $60,600 to flood victims in the affected provinces.
