BEIJING, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush said Monday he has carried human rights activist Joey Cheek's message about the crisis in Darfur to the Chinese government.
Cheek, a gold medal-winning speed skater, had wanted to bring his protest against the Sudanese regime to Chinese officials himself but his visa was revoked. Beijing has had close ties with the government of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who has been indicted on genocide charges by the International Court.
Calling Cheek "a good man," Bush said during an interview with NBC Sports in Beijing that he relayed Cheek's message for him.
"My attitude is, is if you've got relations with Mr. Bashir, think about helping to solve the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. That was my message to the Chinese government," Bush said.
As for the Games themselves, Bush said the Chinese "are being great hosts" and the venues are "fantastic."
"And our team is fired up -- and so am I. I'm excited to be here. It's such a thrill to watch our men and women compete," Bush said.
The president met with the U.S. men's basketball players before their resounding win over the Chinese team.
"And their response was, thanks for coming. We are really, really honored to represent America. And I was impressed by them. And of course they go out and put on a great performance," he said.
