WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Republican U.S. presidential hopeful John McCain has not endorsed a bipartisan energy plan drafted by some of his closest political allies, his campaign said.

The Hill reported Sunday that the proposal being drafted by Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., offers a compromise on the issue of offshore oil drilling.

The bipartisan plan by five Republican and five Democratic senators would provide tax credits for renewable energy that includes a proposal to allow the state legislatures of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina to decide whether to allow drilling at least 50 miles off of their respective coasts.

McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said McCain is waiting to see a final draft of the legislation before taking a position.

"John McCain would prefer and would continue to urge members of Congress to take his all-of-the-above approach to solving the country's energy crisis," Bounds said.

The Arizona senator has called for a repeal of the longstanding federal ban on oil drilling along the Outer Continental Shelf.
