PHOENIX, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Leaders of Arizona's black community say Republican presidential hopeful John McCain has done little to reach out to them as a member of Congress.

The Boston Globe reported Sunday that when McCain was running for re-election in 1984, he boasted he was "getting results for ALL Arizonans," his campaign literature noting that he had visited all of the state's 20 tribal reservations.

But some African American leaders say their community has been given short shrift by the Arizona senator.

"There was a perception I had from the beginning that he did not relate to, or get involved with us," said former Phoenix City Councilman Calvin Goode, who is African-American. "I'm a lifetime member of the NAACP here in Phoenix and I've never seen him come around."

For his part, McCain said during his 2000 presidential bid that he was not "particularly proud of my record with African-Americans, mainly because I'm a senator from a state where the African-American population is small."
