SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Recent firebomb attacks on two University of California Santa Cruz animal researchers have angered and worried academics across the state.
Most say they are concerned but will not be intimidated from doing their work, reported the Los Angeles Times Sunday.
"There is deep concern in our community," said UCLA Chancellor Gene Block. "People are concerned about their safety, but that is not affecting their work. They are going to continue doing the research."
The two incendiary attacks in Santa Cruz occurred just three minutes apart on the morning of Aug. 2. There were no serious injuries in either incident, but one unidentified researcher's car was destroyed and there was damage to the front porch of the home of researcher David Feldheim. He, his wife, and two children escaped smoke by slipping down an emergency ladder.
"This is the first attack on animal researchers we are aware of where there were children in the home," said Bruce Margon, UC Santa Cruz's vice chancellor for research. "Everyone agrees that is totally unconscionable."
