Moon: U.N. should adopt Declaration text

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The United Nations should adopt part of the U.S. Declaration of Independence in its charter, a leader of the Global Peace Festival said in Washington Saturday.

That would guarantee fundamental human rights, Hyun-jin Moon, GPF co-chairman, told an audience of thousands at the National Mall. The idea that we are "endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights" means that human rights cannot be abridged by governments, he said.

Moon -- who is also chairman of News World Communications Inc., which owns UPI -- was speaking at the National Mall, at the closing of the Global Peace Festival, a weeklong program of service and interfaith projects in Washington.

"America must revive its founding vision and take leadership in the global quest for peace," he said.

World problems are too complex to yield to traditional politics or military force, he added. A universal vision is called for.

The American motto, "One Nation under God," should be expanded to embrace the world as "One Family under God," he said.

Moon urged the U.S. government to support the creation of a religious council at the United Nations.
