Edwards figure rules out paternity test

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- A woman with whom former U.S. presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted having an affair has ruled out taking a paternity test, The Washington Post reported.

Rielle Hunter told the newspaper through her attorney she will not pursue DNA testing to establish paternity of her daughter and that she would not participate in a test "now or in the future," the Post said Saturday.

Edwards Friday admitted publicly having an affair with Hunter in 2006. He said he could not be the father because the affair ended before Hunter's daughter -- now 5 months old -- was conceived.

Edwards told ABC News he would take a paternity test and "would love to see it happen."

In an e-mail to the Post, Hunter's attorney, Robert Gordon, said his client wanted to "maintain her privacy and her daughter's privacy."

"Furthermore, Rielle will not participate in DNA testing or any other invasion of her or her daughter's privacy now or in the future," Gordon said.

Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina, was Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's running mate in 2004 and was a leading contender during much of the Democratic presidential nomination campaign this year.
