Mexico: Hurricane forms off Pacific Coast

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- A tropical storm off the Pacific coast of Mexico has formed into a hurricane, Mexican officials said Friday.

The hurricane, named Hernan, was less than 1,000 miles off the western Mexican coast Friday and was not expected make landfall, El Universal reported online.

Five named storms have formed in the Pacific so far this hurricane season.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted Thursday that this year's hurricane season in the Pacific would produce at least 10 storms.
