WASHINGTON, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has been given a speaking role at the Republican National Convention in Minnesota, a spokeswoman said Friday.
Cheney's popularity poll numbers are even lower than U.S. President George Bush's but some Republican loyalists want him to address the convention.
Megan Mitchell, a spokeswoman for the vice president, told CNN that Cheney might be among the speakers on the first night. She said that the details are being worked out with the party and the campaign of the presumptive nominee, U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
"The vice president looks forward to participating in the Republican National Convention and continuing to work for the election of Senator McCain and other Republican candidates in the coming months." Mitchell said.
The convention is scheduled for Sept. 1- 4 in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
