Xinhua quoted Chinese experts that the quake hit shortly before 6 p.m. in Qingchuan county, with the epicenter about 6.2 miles underground.

The country is adjacent to Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. The casualties were in Yaodu township, which was also severely affected by the May 12 quake, the report said.

A bridge collapsed in the Tuesday quake, disrupting traffic on National Highway 212.

Including Tuesday's quake, authorities said a total of 22,019 aftershocks had been detected since the May 12 devastation in the southwest province, which killed nearly 70,000 people.

Up to 18,194 people have still not been accounted for from the May 12 tragedy, while another 374,468 were injured.

Earlier reports said the Olympic torch relay was moving through Sichuan Tuesday at the time of the quake. The Beijing Summer Olympics is set to begin Friday.
