Woman allegedly ditched son at Wal-Mart

INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Indianapolis police say a tip from a television viewer led them to a woman who allegedly abandoned her 3-year-old son at a Wal-Mart store in June.

Julia Ornelas, 39, was arrested in the city after someone recognized her from a TV newscast and called police, The Indianapolis Star said Tuesday.

Ornelas was arrested on Indianapolis's Near Southside on a July 31 warrant charging her with neglect of a dependent. She is accused of leaving her son, Julian, in a Frankfort County Wal-Mart on June 13 with a backpack of toys and a letter stating she couldn't care for the boy after his father had left her.

Julian, who was seen on surveillance video trying to run after his mother as she left the store, is staying with a foster family.
