The storms felled trees and power lines and there was a report of a tornado in the city's western suburbs, the Chicago Tribune reported.
A tornado warning was posted for Will, DuPage and Cook Counties until 8:45 p.m. and a severe thunderstorm watch was in effect until Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, the newspaper said.
At Wrigley Field, where the Cubs were playing the Houston Astros, the weather caused a delay of almost three hours and team officials urged fans to evacuate to the stadium's concourse, the Tribune reported.
