WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- U.S. House Republicans' pleas for a special session on energy fell on deaf ears at the White House, which said such a session wouldn't make any difference.

"We don't have plans to call Congress into session -- it won't make a difference if Democratic leaders are unwilling to bring up a bill for an up-down vote," White House spokesman Tony Fratto told The Hill in an e-mail.

Reps. Jeb Hensarling , R-Texas, and Mike Pence, R-Ind., asked President George Bush to call the special session in an Aug. 1 letter. The same day, when the House adjourned for the August recess, several Republicans launched an unusual protest on the House floor, maintaining debate on energy measures and urging House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to call congressional members back to work.

The Republicans' protests continued Monday, with several House Republicans speaking on energy from the House floor, even though the House has adjourned.

Members of the House GOP leadership did not attend Monday's demonstration, but Minority Whip Roy Blunt, R--Mo., will attend the protest on Wednesday and Thursday, his office said. Minority Leader John Boehner's office said the Ohio Republican would try to attend at the end of the week.
