WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Republican officials in Washington offer conflicting accounts on whether Vice President Dick Cheney will attend the GOP convention next month, CNN said.

Some party officials said Cheney will not appear at the convention in St. Paul, Minn. They say presumptive presidential nominee Sen. John McCain wants to get past the Bush-Cheney era and one party official told CNN there is a "mutual understanding" between the McCain campaign and the vice president's office that it is "unlikely" Cheney will attend the convention.

However, another party official said talks are being held and the Cheney and McCain camps are "trying to work it out."

The American Spectator reported Monday that Cheney was not expected to go to the convention, CNN said.

A McCain campaign spokesman who was asked about the matter told CNN the campaign has "not announced the speakers or any details" about the convention. A spokeswoman for Cheney's "schedule for next week has not even been set up," CNN said.
