LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Kathy Hilton, whose daughter Paris Hilton was used in an ad for GOP U.S. presidential hopeful John McCain, says the ad was "frivolous" and "a waste."

Kathy Hilton made the comments in a blog at the Huffington Post, in response to repeated questions about the use of her daughter's image -- along with that of pop star Britney Spears -- in a McCain ad that criticized McCain's likely Democratic rival, Barack Obama, for being a celebrity.

"It is a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign," Kathy Hilton said. "It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs. And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States."

McCain has said he is proud of the ad, which he said was intended to be humorous. Obama has told campaign audiences the ad has little to do with the issues facing the country.

Kathy Hilton and her husband donated a total of $4,600 to McCain's campaign this year, campaign records show.
