Turkey: Arrests made in deadly bombings

ISTANBUL, Turkey, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Several suspects have been arrested in connection with a pair of bombings that killed 17 people in Istanbul, a Turkish government official says.

Turkish Interior Minister Besir Atalay said the unspecified number of suspects represented the majority of those thought to have taken part in the bombings last Sunday, the BBC reported Saturday.

The Turkish government had suspected the Kurdistan Workers' Party was responsible for the deadly blasts, but the militant group has denied any involvement.

The bombings, which also left more than 100 people injured, occurred at a phone booth in the Turkish capital and at a trash bin a few yards away.

The explosions occurred nearly in succession, leading some to suspect the first bomb may have been used to attract a crowd.
