SACRAMENTO, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Layoffs ordered by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger may not save the state as much money as he hopes, analysts said.
About 10,300 state employees were notified of layoffs Friday, the Sacramento Bee reports. That is about half the number eligible to be laid off under the executive order Schwarzenegger signed Thursday, requiring massive layoffs and pay cuts.
He also ordered a hard hiring freeze and a ban on overtime.
The administration estimated the layoffs could save the state $1.2 billion a month. However, state employees performing critical health and safety functions and those whose jobs bring in revenue were exempted.
Resources Secretary Mike Chrisman would not say how many people were laid off. But those whose jobs were spared included not only firefighters, who are battling a record wildfire season, but also lifeguards at state parks.
Chrisman also spared seasonal workers who collect fees at state parks because they bring in revenue.
