SWANSEA, Wales, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- A Welsh tourist shot in the head while visiting the island of Antigua may now be brain dead, doctors say.

Doctors said Ben Mullany, 31, was being treated by British head injury surgeons at Morriston Hospital in the Welsh city of Swansea, but remained in a coma with a bullet lodged inside his head, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.

Mullany was shot last Sunday morning on the Caribbean island along with his wife Catherine. Mullany's 31-year-old wife died during the attack at the Cocos Hotel.

Police investigators suspect the incident may be linked to an earlier homicide on the island in which a Syrian immigrant was killed by a single gunshot in his Antiguan apartment.

Antiguan Police Commissioner Gary Nelson said the incidents both appeared to be botched robberies that escalated to homicides.

The Telegraph said the former senior Canadian police officer's force is being aided in its investigation by Scotland Yard officials.
