MOSCOW, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A Russian nuclear-powered submarine has test-fired a ballistic missile from the Barents Sea, a military spokesman said Friday.

The submarine Ryazan successfully fired the missile from a submerged position, RIA Novosti reported.

"The missile hit a designated target at the Kura test site in Kamchatka at the designated time," said Russian Navy Capt. 1st Rank Igor Dygalo.

Dygalo did not identify the type of missile that was fired. He said specifics of the launch would be announced later.

The test was conducted in the Kura Test Range in northern Kamchatka, which is surrounded by the Okhotsk Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
