Poll: War in Afghanistan more important

PRINCETON, N.J., July 30 (UPI) -- The war in Afghanistan edges the war in Iraq as more important for the United States, results from a Gallup Poll released Wednesday indicate.

Forty-four percent of people polled indicated the war in Afghanistan was the more important war, compared to 38 percent who said the war in Iraq was more vital, poll results indicated. About 10 percent said both were equally important.

The Princeton, N.J., polling agency said said two-thirds of survey participants -- 68 percent -- agreed with the basis for sending military forces to Afghanistan, saying it wasn't a mistake.

The poll included a question in which half of respondents were asked about sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan "from Iraq" and the other half asked about sending troops. A majority favored sending additional troops in either circumstance, pollsters said.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews Friday through Sunday with 1,007 adults. The total sampling has a margin of error of 3 percentage points. The random question has a margin of error 5 percentage points.
