India, Pakistan border firing reported

NEW DELHI, July 29 (UPI) -- Indian and Pakistani border troops in Kashmir exchanged fire, resulting in an Indian soldier's death, defense sources told the Press Trust of India.

The firing, in violation of a November 2003 case-fire between the two countries, lasted 16 hours across the so-called Line of Control, stopping early Tuesday, the report said.

The dead soldier's body had been recovered.

PTI also said there were reports that four Pakistanis were killed when Indians returned fire.

Indian defense sources told PTI Pakistani troops, after crossing the LoC Monday afternoon, came to the barbed wire fence demanding the Indian troops vacate an observation post at the Nowgam sector of Jammu and Kashmir province. The report said after heated exchange of words, a Pakistani trooper fired indiscriminately, killing one soldier.

The Times of India reported it was the sixth cease-fire violation in three weeks.

CNN reported Pakistani officials could not be reached for comment, noting Monday's clashes may cause a serious setback to the peace talks between the two neighbors, who have fought two wars over Kashmir.

The BBC quoted a Pakistani army spokesman that he had no information on the clashes.
