Anarchists try to organize Denver deal

DENVER, July 29 (UPI) -- Anarchists have promised peace at the upcoming Democratic National Convention if Denver officials will spend $50 million on the community rather than security.

The offer has been rejected by city officials who note that the federal funds are specified for protection against any type of security or terrorist threat, the Rocky Mountain News reported Tuesday.

But Unconventional Denver, a self-described anarchist group, said either they or the offer will also remain through the Democrats' convention, which begins Aug. 25. Unconventional Denver spokesman Tim Simons it wasn't a publicity stunt when they offered to sit out the event if the city, the federal government and the Democratic National Committee would "redirect" the $50 million to healthcare, education and housing.

A Denver Mayor's Office spokeswoman said the grant is needed to protect everyone, including protesters.

"Congress appropriated these security-designated funds to both convention host cities because, in a post- 9/11 world, planning for major national events like this requires heightened security preparations," spokeswoman Lindy Eichenbaum Lent told the Rocky Mountain News. "It is in the interest of local residents, businesses and visitors, including those participating in demonstrations, to have a safe and secure event."
