NEW YORK, July 28 (UPI) -- A New York man is facing charges for allegedly causing his wife to fall off the roof of a car while driving drunk, leaving her in a critical state, police said.
Diamond Mircea, 29, of Islip Terrace was jailed Sunday and charged with first-degree vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated after his wife attempted to prevent him from driving away by throwing herself onto the roof of his Nissan, Newsday reported.
The man's wife, Monica Mircea, 25, held onto the car as her husband drove down the street, but soon lost her grip and hit her head on the ground, authorities said.
Officials said the woman was in critical condition Sunday and being treated at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, N.Y.
Sgt. Tony Lavista said officials were still investigating the cause of the couple's fight.
