Honeymooning bride slain in Antigua

SAINT JOHN'S, Antigua and Barbuda, July 28 (UPI) -- A British doctor was shot to death and her husband critically wounded as they honeymooned on the Caribbean island of Antigua, officials said Monday.

The British Foreign Office said Catherine Mullany, 31, a doctor at a Welsh hospital, was killed in her hotel room, while her husband Benjamin, also 31, a physiotherapist, was in critical condition after being shot in the neck, The Daily Mail reported.

The newlyweds were set to return to Britain Monday after spending two weeks in the Caribbean on their honeymoon, the newspaper said. It reported that police are trying to confirm a theory the couple was shot during a robbery while they were asleep in their hotel room.

The Mail said police dogs were searching in the shrubbery around the luxury hotel, adding that Antiguan Tourism Minister Harold Lovell has said police would also look into possible security lapses at the hotel, which employs guards.
