Hepatitis cases linked to Vegas clinic

LAS VEGAS, July 25 (UPI) -- Nevada health officials say they have traced seven cases of hepatitis C to two patients who underwent procedures at a Las Vegas clinic last year.

The Southern Nevada Health District said Thursday that one of the patients was known to be a carrier of the disease at the time of the procedure, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

The newspaper said investigators planned to next start checking to see how many patients who underwent procedures at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada may have been exposed to the disease between 2004 and Jan. 11.

Prosecutors are investigating the hepatitis cases, which are suspected to have been caused by the improper re-using of syringes.

The Review-Journal said investigators had broken down a "wall of silence" among the center's nurses by issuing grand jury subpoenas.
