Canadian border guard busted in drug sting

MONTREAL, July 25 (UPI) -- A Canadian border guard in Quebec is among eight people arrested in an alleged cocaine smuggling ring based in Miami, federal officials said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said a sting operation last weekend led to the arrests that included 26-year-old Canadian Border Services Agency worker James Munro, the Globe and Mail newspaper said.

The RCMP allege Munro tipped off smugglers as to when he would be working solo on overnight shifts at the border crossing at Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle that leads to Plattsburgh, N.Y.

"Mr. Munro would advise his partners in crime when he would be working at a certain time of the day at a certain booth," RCMP Staff Sgt. Andre Potvin alleged to the newspaper. "His role, although limited, was very important for that criminal element."

Munro has been a border guard for five years and CBSA spokesman Bernard Brie said he had a clean record, the report said.

The sting netted more than 100 pounds of cocaine police said was funneled through Miami from Colombia.
