MAPLEWOOD, Mo., July 23 (UPI) -- Investigators say they will use dental records to identify the remains of the gunman who shot a firefighter and two cops outside St. Louis.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch said Wednesday St. Louis County police said the remains likely are those of Mark Knobbe, 52, the owner of the home who was described as a recluse who has not been seen since Monday's shootout.

The remains were found inside the burned-out home in Maplewood where two police officers were wounded and a rookie firefighter killed as they responded to a vehicle fire in front of the residence.

The Post-Dispatch said Knobbe had no criminal record, but had been cited a few times for failing to keep up his property. He was also described as a neighborhood crank who yelled at children who wandered on to his yard.
