PITTSBURGH, July 22 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh-area woman charged with killing a pregnant teenager for her unborn child tried to do the same thing almost two decades ago, officials said.
Andrea Curry-Demus spent seven years in prison for slashing a pregnant woman and then kidnapping a baby to claim as her own, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Kevin Flaherty, the lawyer who represented her in 1990, described her as "mentally slow."
"I don't recall that she actually understood the ramifications of what she was doing," Flaherty said.
Curry-Demus was charged with murder after police found the body of Kia Johnson in her apartment in Wilkinsburg. Curry-Demus had showed up at a hospital with a baby she claimed was hers.
Investigators say that the two women met last week in the visiting area at the Allegheny County Jail, where Curry-Demus was visiting her husband and Johnson her boyfriend.
Curry-Demus's sister, Brooke Curry, could also face criminal charges for taking police to the wrong apartment when they were searching for the mother of Johnson's baby.
